Fast and Easy Exercises For Work From Home Moms

Fast and Easy Exercises For Work From Home Moms

I am always interested in finding fast fitness moves that can be done anywhere, and especially in my office. Sitting at a computer for many hours a day can wreak havoc with your lower back so taking time to do some quick and easy moves can be very beneficial and taking a break from your monitor will also help you focus when you get back to work.

Seated Leg Lift

Grab a stationary chair in your office, dining room, or living room. (I tried these in my office chair and while it was entertaining, it was not stable!) You can also use an exercise ball. I do both, but don’t advise you try the ball until you have done the chair exercises and worked your way through the inevitable muscle soreness.

  1. Sit tall in your chair with your feet planted firmly on the floor.
  2. Place your hands underneath your thighs.
  3. Slowly pull your knees up toward your chest. Contract or squeeze your abdominals as your hold this position for a count of 4. Slowly return to the starting position. Do 5 – 10 repetitions. As you progress and your abdominals get stronger, work up to 10 – 20 repetitions.

Be sure to be aware of the position of your spine when doing these seated leg lifts. Just because you are sitting, you shouldn’t be slouching. Elongate your spine as if somebody were holding you up straight by the ponytail on the top of your head, but don’t arch your back. You want to be straight.

Exhale when you lift your knees up toward your chest and inhale when you return to the starting position.

Add this quick and easy exercise to your personal “to-do” list every day and I promise your back will begin to feel better very quickly.

Seated Straight Leg Raise

The video below will show you how to do this super easy leg raise which will work the muscles in the front part of your upper leg and some of the lower abdominal muscles in the trunk area.

Are You Genuinely Connecting With Your Customers?

My business philosophy has always been this: “If I am not connecting with my clients, consumers

and team members, then I am not doing my job.”

A true entrepreneur puts relationships ahead of profits because he or she knows that strong

relationships just naturally lead to healthier profits in terms of partnerships and referrals.

Unsure how to build trusting and enduring relationships with your audience? Here are some tried and true recommendations:

  • Let your voice be heard. Record videos if you are comfortable in front of a video camera. If not, consider creating PowerPoint videos with voice-overs. Frankly, I prefer the second but that is a personal choice and you should only do what you are truly comfortable with. If you absolutely hate having a camera in your face, your misery will show and your message will not be heard.
  • Consider hosting your own FREE radio program on BlogTalkRadio. My weekly broadcast, Your Partner In Success Radio, has become so popular, and I have had the great good fortune to interview so many fabulous personalities and business people that I couldn’t shut the program down if I wanted to, and I don’t!
  • Host as many free workshops and teleseminars as you can handle. Of course you have valuable information to share, so share away. Your audience will appreciate it.
  • Ask for feedback and suggestions. You will be very surprised by how generous your fellow entrepreneurs can be with their comments, observations and advice.
  • Stay in touch with your list! I don’t recommend that you overwhelm people but you must stay in touch by either sending out an automated blog broadcast or set up your newsletter or ezine to publish consistently once or twice a month. You cannot drop off the face of the earth and then just suddenly reappear when you have something to sell or promote. You will shed email subscribers at an alarming rate. And who could blame them?
  • Be religious about responding to emails. One of the very WORST things a virtual assistant, or other virtual service provider can do is to neglect this very important means of communication. If your client or customers do not feel like they are being heard, that they are very important to your business, they will quite simply find somebody who does care about their business. Actually, this one probably should have been placed in the number one slot! It is that important. Even if you don’t have good news or are behind in a project, it is imperative that you communicate with your client or customer.
  • If you are blogging regularly, ask for comments on your blog post. People will often read your content, but don’t even think to leave a comment or ask a question. This is a very important dialogue and one you need to foster.  If you are not blogging regularly…. why not??
Customer Education

What are your strategies to educate your customers on the benefits of your product or service?

For instance, articles, seminars, or demos.

This education could also be more general about your industry or something related to your industry.

My clients love them!

These are just a few things that we consistently do to keep our clients happy and loving doing business us. I would love to hear your thoughts on these suggestions and hear from you what you do to connect with your clients.

How Magic Is Your To Do List?

How Magic Is Your To Do List?

I don’t know about you, but I am an inveterate list maker. I recall making lists as soon as I could read and write at the age of 3. To this day, my mother swears that I learned both by osmosis. She would find me sitting in front of the fireplace which was flanked with floor to ceiling bookcases “reading” adult books, largely Readers Digest as I recall. Since I was the oldest of many children, she figured that I was blissfully and harmlessly entertaining myself and had the great good sense to not take the books away from me and try to replace them with childish picture books. I would have rebelled, I promise you!

I can very clearly recall writing out my Halloween costume needs list before I even hit kindergarten and have made daily lists ever since. According to experts, the second you write something down, you’re infinitely more likely to actually make it happen than if you rely on your often overburdened memory. Some of the greatest thinkers – and achievers! – of our time have been inveterate list-makers, including:

Benjamin Franklin
Leonardo Davinci
Thomas Jefferson
Martha Stewart
And you and me!

Let’s face it. For many people lists work. Many books have been written about the power of lists but not all lists are created equal. Making a list and then ignoring it is a total waste of your time and energy so I have compiled a quick report on the 10 biggest mistakes you may be making with your “To-Do” list.

Recommended Reading

I am often asked what some of my favorite reading material is. With a personal library of 3,000 plus or minus books, this is a difficult question for me to answer. So, I am happy to share some of my current reading and would love to hear your recommendations. I read just about anything with the single exception being romance novels. Bodice rippers tend to have me rolling my eyeballs and throwing the book across the room. Give me a terrific business book, a beautifully crafted murder mystery or anything about history and I am in love. So please send me your recommendations and I thank you in advance!

Crush It by Gary Vaynerchuk

Crush It!Who would have thought that a wise-cracking, smart-mouthed 30-something could turn into an internet sensation – with a daily video show on wine? Well, Gary Vaynerchuk has endeared himself to millions through his Wine Library TV, his keynote speeches, and his best-selling business book, “Crush It!” In it, he shares the secrets of his success, including:

  1. Find your passion. Find the one thing you adore above all else and go for it with all your heart. If you look for the “money” niche, you’ll burn out and give up before you succeed. Or you’ll succeed and hate what you’re doing.
  2. Be willing to hustle. Vaynerchuk credits his willingness to do whatever it took to get ahead – including hosting his show five days a week, without fail, for over a year. Don’t just do something once – do it over and over and over again until people start to notice.
  3. Be who you are. Not everyone warms to Vaynerchuk’s in-your-face style, but those who do adore him. He recommends not even trying to please everyone, and instead doing what you do best.
  4. Build the audience and the money will find you. Vaynerchuk swears that he didn’t try to monetize his rabid and ever-growing audience. Instead, the offers came to him. He thinks anyone can do the same.

Crush It!” recommends finding a niche you love, working your rear off, introducing folks to the real you, and working hard until your audience grows to the point where they just can’t get enough of you. This book is a perfect read if you’re looking for inspiration to begin – or continue – your journey.

Unmarketing by Scott StrattenUnmarketing by Scott Stratten

Do you hate selling and marketing in the “Tell-ya-what-I’m-gonna-do” way? Then Scott Stratten is your man. In his book, “Unmarketing,” Stratten shows you through his personal experience that you can build a successful business – and an audience of enthusiastic customers – without doing the Glengarry/Glen Ross shuffle. Written in a series of blog-post-length sections, the book is chock-full of Stratten’s personal observations, advice, success stories, and words to the wise. A big proponent of social media, Stratten advises readers on how to maximize these tools to build your audience naturally and comfortably. In fact, that’s the basis of his belief: That building relationships should be the backbone of your business, and the only way to do that is naturally, and over time. Sure, there are tips and “secrets” for how to make the most of the tools that are at your disposal, but what it comes down to is relating to the people you want to serve. This book is perfect for new entrepreneurs, or business owners who have been around the block a time or two but don’t know a tweet from a hole in the ground. Stratten presents his lessons in a non-threatening, conversational tone that is easy to read and easy to follow. You’ll want this book in your business library to refer to again and again. Even though many of the stories deal with “Web 2.0” tools (my passion!), Stratten’s advice to be yourself and focus on the relationship will be equally applicable into the future as new technology emerges.

Tribes by Seth Godin

Tribes by Seth GodinIf you are an online businessperson and you have not yet been introduced to Seth Godin, run, do not walk, to your nearest bookstore and get a copy of “Tribes” (then download a free copy of the companion ebook from Seth’s blog here). This book has served as part manifesto, part bible, to a generation of internet-based entrepreneurs. Godin’s thesis in “Tribes,” like most of his work, is extremely simple: There are people out there looking for leaders. If you can become a leader with vision and passion, you can find a tribe of people to lead. While this may seem commonsensical, Godin goes beyond the obvious. Not only does he explain how to find and lead your tribe, he also tells readers they have an almost moral obligation to lead if they are called to do so. If you have an idea and a passion, you need to find the tribe that’s looking for you because they’re lost without you. Godin’s words would have seemed absurd only a decade or two ago. How would someone, for example, with a passion for making clothes for potbellied pigs ever find enough of an audience to make a go of a business? But with the reach of the internet, the lack of barriers to entry for online businesses, and the wealth of free and low-cost tools at your disposal, you don’t need millions, or even hundreds of thousands, of people to create a successful online business. Instead, a loyal tribe of just a few thousand can keep you in sequins and tulle until the end of your days – if you can find them and inspire them. He uses the example of the Grateful Dead, Starbucks, and CrossFit as strong tribes. And he presents tons of ideas for finding and leading your tribe, from being an example, sharing stories, creating a common goal, and more. If you just want to sell “me too” products to a faceless crowd, skip “Tribes.” But if you have dreams of changing the world, “Tribes” is for you.

Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh

Delivering Happiness by Tony HsiehIf you’ve ever ordered shoes (or anything else) from Zappos.com, chances are you’ve ordered again. And again. Because Zappos, an online phenomenon taken to industry leadership by CEO Tony Hsieh, enjoys a staggering 75 percent repeat business. And, because everyone knows it’s much less expensive to sell to a repeat customer than it is to bring in a new customer, that means Zappos must be doing something right. In his book, “Delivering Happiness,” Hsieh shares his sometimes radical, always interesting, views on business, life, happiness, and customer service. It’s worth a read even if you aren’t in the retail business – because every business has customers, and every business can benefit from treating them better. Some of Hsieh’s iconoclastic ideas shared in “Delivering Happiness” include:

  1. “Wow” your customers through service.
  2. Embrace and drive change.
  3. Weirdness is good. (You have to read the book to fully understand this one!)
  4. Constant learning is a prerequisite for growth.
  5. Your company should feel like a family.

Hsieh focuses not only on making his customers happy, but on making his employees happy, too. In a world where employee loyalty is about as common as a Dell laptop in Steve Jobs’ office, Hsieh has made it his mission to make his employees feel committed and attached to Zappos. Some of his ideas may seem better-suited to a business with dozens or hundreds of employees, but solopreneurs and small business owners will find many tips and a lot of inspiration.

Is Your Small Business Blogging Yet?

How To Build a Business Blog On the WordPress Platform

Do you know over 60% of Internet users regularly get their information from blogs that they subscribe to?

Does your business have a blog? Are you sharing information with your readers about what it is that you do and how you can help them build and grow their business? Do you have a wonderful tool, product, service, or widget that can be a money or time saver for other small businesses?

Blogging has become one of the most popular ways to get the message of your business and service out to the world. It is no longer just a way for people to share  thoughts, pictures, recipes, wedding  and vacation plans online with friends and family.

Business blogging is a very powerful marketing tool and every major industry uses blogs to ensure that their customers and clients are kept abreast of new developments and just about any other kind of news that needs to be available on the internet 24 hours a day. If you are not leveraging the Internet to market to a global audience and give your small business a decisive competitive edge, you are very likely leaving a lot of money on the table.

Combine blogging with social media marketing and you can literally explode your online presence in a very short time. By committing to posting to your blog at least 3 times a week you will create a wealth of content that can be used to advertise your services and build trust and rapport with your prospects. And search engines love blogs that are updated regularly!

By leveraging the Internet, your small business can get more done and complete effectively in a global marketplace, but this can be time consuming, and often confusing for a small business. That’s where outsourcing can help. Blogging is one of the services a highly technically savvy Virtual Assistance firm can handle with ease.

There are a number of great blogging platforms available today with the most popular being WordPress and the list below will help you get started with your blog.

A common checklist of blogging tehnologies that you may need to get started:

  • Domain Name. I use and recommend GoDaddy for domain name purchases, but NOT for hosting. Be sure to purchase most extensions of your domain name such as dot com, dot net, dot biz, etc., to ensure that your name and brand is protected. Each domain name will cost about $11 annually.
  • Hosting for your website. I use and recommend HostGator for hosting. Depending on the plan you need, your cost range from $4.95 to $12.95 per month. If you need a toll free number this is also available on their largest hosting package. You will be able to install WordPress from your cpanel using the Fantastico application. This is easy and quick.
  • Premium WordPress Templates. I have several companies that I use a lot, but these are two of my favorites:
  • If your website/blog will be functioning as a membership site, now or in the future, I consider WishList Member an essential plugin.
  • Shopping Cart. 1ShoppingCart incorporates all of the tools your business needs to market and sell online in a single, easy-to-use web-based solution. If you need an affiliate program, you can build that in your shopping cart. The basic plan (I don’t recommend anything below this plan) will cost $59 per month and the professional plan, which includes affiliate marketing, is $99.00 per month. You can also make application here for a payment gateway through Authorize.net or PowerPay so that you can accept credit card payments on your website.
  • PayPal account for accepting payments if you don’t currently have a payment gateway. This is free and you will only pay a fee when a payment is made. You will be able to use your PayPal account in place of a payment gateway if you prefer.
  • Newsletter or email marketing software. Two excellent tools for this are Aweber and Constant Contact.
  • Social Media Profiles. KnowEm Username Check allows you to check for the use of your brand, product, personal name or username instantly on over 400 popular and emerging social media websites. Grab your name and secure your brand before someone else does. They offer free and premium plans.
    • LinkedIn Profile (FREE)
    • Facebook Fan Page for Your Business. (FREE)
    • Twitter Account. (FREE) For branding purposes we use and recommend TweetPages for a very professional Twitter background. They can also create   and Facebook designs. Tell Matt I sent you!
    • Gmail account – you will need this for various services such as Feedburner, Google Analytics, Google Maps, etc.
  • Essential WordPress Plugins. The WordPress community has developed thousands of plugins and themes. If you haven’t tried out WordPress plugins yet, you owe it to yourself and your blog to give them a try. They’re amazingly easy to set up and can boost the functionality of WordPress by quite a lot.You will install these directly from your WordPress control panel:

Are you ready to start building?

If you are interested in tackling this project on your own and want to learn how to build a seriously professional WordPress website/blog my best recommendation is that you sign up for the next Go For Your Dream WordPress Website Workshop. This 4 week online e-course takes you step-by-step through the process of building your website using the Premium Dream Theme. There s also an additional 2 weeks of basic training onlin bonus modules on 1shoppingcart, Authorize.net, PayPal, and installing a Membership site. I highly recommend this training.

Too much information! I can’t even begin to tackle a project like this.

Another alternative is to have us build it for you. We are a Web Development company paired with a Virtual Assistance firm. What does this mean? It means that we do it all, from concept to launch. Our websites are turnkey, meaning that your social media marketing is built in, your branding is complete and all you have to do is blog and we train you on the backend of your website/blog so you are in control of your content!

Free Search Engine Simulator – Test Your Site!

No Follow Tags TreatmentWeekly Recommended Resource

This free search engine simulator tool from To the Web.com shows you just how the search engines "see" your web page. I recommend you test your site(s) right away. I tested all of mine and found that one of them had the following meta tag incorrectly installed which means that Google DOES NOT FOLLOW that link.

<meta name='robots' content='noindex,nofollow' />

I am a web developer and know better, but these things do happen and you need to be sure that you are building and testing your pages correctly. Find the best tools for the job at hand and use them!

Here are the basic No Follow question and answers from Google, Ask.com and Yahoo.

How does your search engine treat the No Follow attribute?

  • Google : The Googlebot does not follow that link.
  • Yahoo : If we find a link we make it available to our algorithms to find new content, whether it has a ‘no follow’ attribute or not. However, if the ‘no follow’ attribute is present, it means that no attribution is given to the target from the source of the link.
  • Ask.com : We have never officially supported No Follow, so your questions don’t apply to our crawler/ranking.

If a site has no web citations and only has one link pointing to it, and that link is from a Wikipedia entry, would your search engine find that site and index it even though the link uses a No Follow attribute?

  • Yahoo : Yes, the link is available to our crawlers for finding the target. Then the target will be crawled and indexed based on our algorithms.
  • Google : Assuming that link is still no-followed per Wikipedia’s current practice, we will not find much less index that page (remember, this is page, not site related; if links to other pages on that site are not no-followed, we will see and potentially index those pages). On a related note, though, and echoing Matt’s earlier sentiments… we hope and expect that more and more sites — including Wikipedia — will adopt a less-absolute approach to no-follow… expiring no-follows, not applying no-follows to trusted contributors, and so on.

Is there any quality given to sites which attract No Follow links from authority sites, besides the lack of the passing of PageRank, Link Authority or “Search Juice”?

  • Google : Since the Googlebot does not follow no-follow links, this isn’t really an issue.
  • Yahoo : As promised in the semantics for the ‘no follow’ tag, the anchor text and attribution will not be carried over to the target of a ‘no follow’ link.

Giving Thanks on Thanksgiving

Happy ThanksgivingI always look forward to the autumn holidays and absolutely love Halloween and Thanksgiving. Being an inveterate list maker, my Thanksgiving meal grocery and to-do list is pulled together months in advance and lovingly attended to in the run up to the actual day. My lists help put tasks, goals, principles, accomplishments and history into context. They also act like a form of journaling as my traditional holidays lists change very little over the years and it is always nostalgic to go back over previous years lists and instantly re-visit that notebook memory and the people who shared the holiday with us.

If you're like me, you look forward to the Thanksgiving Day feast. Our traditional Thanksgiving dinner consists of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, broccoli casserole and a whole variety of delicious side dishes. Baked pumpkin, pecan and apple pie covered with heaps of fresh whipping cream end the meal. And the leftovers! Breakfast for me the day after Thanksgiving always consists of my unfinished dinner plate from the day before. For my husband, it is pecan or apple pie!

Particularly enjoyable to me are those traditions that are just too important to lose. I begin the day by rising much earlier than the rest of the household. No matter what the weather, I wind up outside with my cup of hot chocolate or tea, swathed in layers of pajamas, robe and bunny slippers and tucked under a blanket waiting for the sun to come up. Once the sun has greeted the world, this is the signal for me to begin simmering the giblets for the dressing. This is my alone time before the day becomes filled with family and friends. This year we will be at home with our loved ones and we will do something that is increasingly important in our world. We will be thankful.

Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for the people and blessings of the past year. From pre-meal prayers to providing holiday meals to the homeless, to sending holiday messages to our troops, the holiday is truly a celebration of praise and thanksgiving for all that we have, all that we have done, and all that is before us.

From our home to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Just Found the PERFECT Christmas Gift For Clients and Customers!

My family shopping is complete. The Christmas cards are even ready to mail as soon as the Post Office starts selling beautiful Christmas stamps next month. Our holiday travel plans are done and we just bought tickets to see Wicked at the Orpheum Theatre next month while we are in San Francisco.

What had me in a type of quandary however was what to get my business clients that would be welcome, usable, and takes their personal and business interests into account and lets them know just how much I appreciate them every day of the year. My staff and I considered the usual type of "corporate" gifts, you know; gift baskets, Christmas wreaths, magazine or journal subscriptions, etc., but nothing made us sit up and pay attention until we decided that a gift for the office was something that made good sense. That led me to looking around my own office for inspiration which took absolutely no time at all as it happens. Journaling Gems by "The Journaling Jenius"

Judy Peebles, The Journaling Jenius gifted me with a set of "Journaling Jems" cards earlier this year and I USE them! As you can see by the picture they are front and center on my desk. Since this is where most of my waking hours are spent, I peruse these cards regularly and they are a source of inspiration each time I rifle through them for ideas.

If you are looking for a thoughtful, inspirational and very practical gift for your clients or customers visit The Journaling Jenius for some great holiday gift giving ideas. I did!

Invitation To Read 1990 Page "Health Care" Bill in Louisiana

Massive Spending Bills by US CongressI got this today from U.S. Senator David Vitter and wanted to pass it on. I freely admit that what Congress is up to scares the daylights out of me.

I WILL be reading this bill!

From the desk of David Vitter

As you know, the U.S. House of Representatives recently introduced a 1,990 page health care bill, and I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know I have provided a copy of the bill for you to read at all of my eight office locations.

  • Acadiana Office – 800 Lafayette Street, Suite 1200, Lafayette
  • Southwest Office – 3221 Ryan Street, Suite E, Lake Charles
  • Baton Rouge/River Parishes Office – 858 Convention Street, Baton Rouge
  • Southeast Office – 2800 Veterans Boulevard, Suite 201, Metairie
  • Central Louisiana Office– 2230 South MacArthur Drive, Suite 4, Alexandria
  • Northwest Louisiana Office– 920 Pierremont Road, Suite 113, Shreveport
  • Northeast Louisiana Office– 1217 North 19th Street, Monroe
  • Washington, DC Office – 516 Hart Senate Office Building, Washington, DC

You may also access the health care bill and continuous updates to the bill and the debates on my website.

This is a critical point in America’s future, and I believe everyone should have access to the proposed bills. This access allows the public to be well informed during this debate and understand how this legislation will affect them.

Again, do not hesitate to contact one of my eight offices or feel free to check my website, www.vitter.senate.gov, for up-to-date information on health care reform.

StarDust WordPress Template

Melanie J. WilliamsI recently began working with a brand new WordPress template created by "The Internet Genius", Ben Cope called Stardust Theme and love it! In fact, we are currently using it for 3 different clients. Since each client has a very different business sensibility it is imperative that we work with templates that are very easy to customize to the clients needs without looking like we are just using the same template over and over again.

Take a look at MelanieJWilliams.com. This site is not completely done, but will give you an idea of just how lovely this template is.

Membership Websites

When laying out the plan for your WordPress platform website you may want to consider creating a membership site meaning that you are providing valuable and needed content to paying customers each month. Quite literally a membership site means that you sign up readers to pay a monthly subscription fee. Your members will receive coaching, teaching, business tips, audios, videos, downloads or anything else that your particular niche can provide. We strongly recommend using WP Wishlist which is a very affordable and incredibly powerful WordPress plugin. Popular features include Total Content Protection, Sequential Content Delivery, Easy Member Management and much more.

WishList Products Interview Series

Special guest Philip Mutrie talks about how WP WishList helped him grow his optin list to 12,000 people. That all by itself makes it worth listening to but of course they covered other very important topics such as some powerful ways to increase interaction with your members, why creating "sub-groups" can increase member loyalty, why not accepting everyone can improve your membership and lastly, they discuss the 2 step registration process. Click here to listen to interview and then decide if a membership site is the perfect solution for your online business.

Other Recommendations

We recommend GoDaddy for domain name purchases but don't really like hosting WordPress sites with them. We find that they put way too many sites on one server which means bottlenecks and slow loading pages. We now host all WordPress sites on HostGator and have been very happy with the results.

If you have any questions about WordPress and membership sites please email them to me at info @ virtualassistantindustry.com.
